Mikayla locked gazes with Noah. Her lungs seized. Fear gripped her. Noah’s steady gaze and calm demeanor kept her nerves a notch below panic.

“Here’s the thing.” Bode’s voice wasn’t much more than a whisper. “I wouldn’t hurt Mikayla.”

“You’re going to have to do better than that, Bode.”

“Mikayla, you remember that motorcycle I had?”

“Yes.”

“I still have it and I used it last night.” His normally calm-to-the-point-of-boring voice was erratic, like a heartbeat monitor on a patient who was crashing.

Mikayla bit back the urge to respond. The sound of her own heart jabbing her ribs filled her ears.

“That’s all I can say on a cell. But there’s so much more. No matter what happens, I need you to know I would never do anything to hurt you. I still care about you.”

Noah white-knuckled the phone. Anger? Jealousy? To his credit, he kept silent even though she could almost see the words forming on his lips.

“Leave my mother out of this, Bode.”

A voice sounded in the background. “Here you go.” It was her mother’s. No doubt returning with the glass of water he’d requested a minute ago.

“Thank you, Mrs. Johnson.” His voice became loud and clear when he said, “I have to go, but I appreciate your hospitality.”

Background noise came over the line and then her mother’s blissful voice said, “Can I call you right back?”

Noah shook his head and clenched his jaw.

“No. Mom. I know this is going to sound like a strange request but keep me on the line. You can set the phone down to see Bode out, but I need to speak to you. Okay?”

“Oh, all right.” Her mother sounded confused. At least she’d listened.

Then there were two voices in the background, too far from the receiver for Mikayla to make out what was being said. She could’ve sworn she heard a door close. The breath she’d been holding came out in a slow sigh when her mother’s voice came back on the line.

“What did you want to speak to me about, honey?”

“Is Bode gone?”

“Yes.”

“Can you move to the front window and check that he’s pulling away?”

“I can hear his car, but I’ll go check if it’s important to you.”

“It is, Mom.” She needed to come up with a quick explanation to ward off the many questions that had to be building in her mother’s mind. “After the ordeal last night, I’m overly paranoid.”

“Bode’s a decent person…” Her mother gasped. She seemed to catch on to the implication when she said, “He didn’t…did he?”

“His name came up in the investigation. I don’t want to scare you but don’t trust anyone until we get this sorted out. Okay, Mom? Not even people you think you know and especially not anyone I know.”

“Oh, honey. I hadn’t thought this nightmare could get worse. But, yes, I see his car pulling out of the drive. He’s on the street now. Should I call the sheriff?”

“No. It’s okay. We can’t let our guard down until the person who did this is behind bars.” She didn’t want to alarm her mother, so she didn’t ask if he’d sounded threatening.
