Chapter Fourteen

THE ARM WRAPPED around my waist feels heavy in a good kind of way. Something tickles my nose. I brush at it and nestle into the warmth, feeling secure and at peace.

“Don’t wiggle. Please, for the love of all that’s holy, don’t move,” Rafe rasps in my ear.

My eyes fly open. Rafe groans. He’s spooning me, and it’s very apparent the effect this has had on him.

“Rafe…”

“Shut up. Don’t say a word.” His voice sounds strangled, and he promptly rolls out of bed. The bathroom door opens and closes.

Sitting up, I frown. Caught in my hair is a white feather. I pull it out and stare at it. It’s far too big to be from a pillow. The shower turns on, and I cross my legs, wishing he’d let me pee first. In a few minutes he returns, still damp, with a towel wrapped around his hips. I have an urge to grab that towel but instead dart past him into the bathroom without so much as a good morning.

In the shower, the warm water and my soapy hands don’t help my attempt to erase Rafe’s sculpted body from my mind’s eye. I scrub almost to the point of pain, yet my body tingles with need. When did I become so sex-obsessed? Maybe I’m a sex addict. Great. I guess it’s true; addiction runs in families. Robert Earl’s addicted to alcohol, Crimson to her prescription meds, and me, apparently, to handsome men.

I shut off the water and angry male voices filter through the bathroom door. Wrapping a towel around my body, I quietly crack the door. Luc and Rafe are shouting smack like two wrestlers before a match. Pandemonium reigns as Luc argues with Madge, Rafe, and a muscular blond man with long hair and a neat beard. Honest to God, it looks like a convention of angry beautiful people.

Luc sees me first and smiles. He’s unshaven and disheveled, looking much like he did the morning of the snowstorm.

“Friday, do you know how worried I’ve been? Hells bells, you could’ve at least answered my text and set my mind at ease,” he chides.

Behind him, Rafe’s eyes burn with anger. “I sent you a text telling you she was fine and would be leaving with me and Mar— er, Madge.”

He steps toward Luc with his fist clenched. Is my easygoing friend about to take down my boss?

“Easy, mate. Don’t get yourself in trouble.” The blond guy steps between Luc and Rafe. Judging by his wide grin, he’s amused by the entire situation.

“Jolene works for me, and I have need of her assistance,” Luc counters. “I will see that she arrives home safe and sound.”

I don’t understand the deep-rooted animosity between these two men, but regardless, I’m tired of being in the middle.

Rafe struggles to break free of the ironclad grip his friend now has on his biceps.

“What’s the matter, Riff-Raff? Don’t you trust me?”

“Hell, no, I don’t trust you, Lucy,” Rafe roars.

Luc laughs, taunting him.

“Now’s not the time to deal with this.
