Chapter Ten

It was Saturday – two days since I’d stormed out of the hospital. I had cancelled our Friday night games for the simple fact that it seemed inappropriate to have fun while my best friend was in the hospital. Kimone was busy and I knew Maya wouldn’t have come anyway, which suited me just fine. I wasn’t ready to face the unnecessary drama I knew Maya would create. Especially because up to last night, I was still bothered over Jennifer’s suggestion for me to marry her fiancé.

However, when I got news this morning that Jennifer was doing much better and that she was scheduled to be discharged this afternoon, a heavy burden was lifted off of my shoulders. Maybe now she would be able to think straight and realize how foolish her idea had been. I wouldn’t be surprised if Taj had talked her into it. This silly fantasy of his of us getting together was out of control and I wanted no part of it. How did Taj get Jennifer to even agree with him?

In any event, I wanted to be there for Jennifer during her discharge from the hospital, but I’d promised Reuben that we would begin my weight gaining program today. The ‘Hall of Fame’ ceremony was two months away and I wanted to look as stunning as I possibly could. All of the big names in the real estate industry were expected to be there and I wanted to make a lasting impression. My recent commission had earned me over nine hundred and eighty thousand dollars – the most I’d ever earned at one time since beginning my career and I suddenly had an overwhelming desire to splurge some of it on a gorgeous formal gown.

Looking in the mirror at my form, I wasn’t altogether depressed about it. My hips were curvy enough. It was just my upper body that needed a lift. If Reuben was as good as he said he was, hopefully I would achieve my goal of a ‘well-proportioned’ body by the time of the event. A long shot? Maybe, but I was willing to do whatever I could to retain my calories in all the right areas. Grabbing my car keys from the coffee table, I proceeded to exit my condo. I had agreed to meet Reuben at the gym at 2:00 p.m.

“Well, hello, chica…”

I paused in my attempt to sit behind the steering wheel. I looked up and saw Maya standing several feet away with her arms folded. My temperature dipped to subzero before it shot past its normal gauge. This scene appeared to mirror the nightmare I’d had the other night about Maya trying to blackmail me. I thought I never would have been ready to face her, but all of a sudden I felt a surge of energy fly up my spine. And I knew it wasn’t the Holy Ghost.

“What are you doing here?” I snapped at her.

“Ooh, so testy. Your conscience must be eating you alive.”

“At least I have one,” I retorted.
