There are always some contemporary events in which humor or satire seem impossible. A mass shooting at an elementary school comes to mind. In fact, satire might well be used to call attention to the need for change, holding up to ridicule, perhaps, those who put their gun freedoms above the safety of children. It is no easy achievement and would take a deft touch, an understated outrage. But there are rich historical examples. Perhaps the greatest is A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. His acidic critique of British treatment of the Irish includes the “modest” suggestion that the problem of poverty in Catholic Ireland might be mitigated by the poor selling extra babies to the aristocracy as a food source. It hit close enough to home that some Brits thought that Swift, who published it anonymously, was serious.
