Learning Environment Questions

Beyond the details mentioned in Chapter 4, is this space significant to you in any way? Every room I teach in at Hutchinson Hall at the University of Washington is rich with stories and significance both for me and for the students in the room. Nearly every spot contains a teaching story. When I did a workshop for the university where I was first introduced to the Alexander Technique, my relationship to the students was enriched: I realized, “One of them could be me.” When I prepared to teach at the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba, Australia, and realized it was possible that F.M. Alexander might once have been there, I felt a sense of gratitude. If you are visiting a new school or one that has just moved, that first time there is special, and celebrating the new place might be part of the workshop. It works the other way around, too: a particular room where I teach regularly is not one I would choose as a teaching space; preparing to teach there requires me to consciously renew my desire to teach, particularly noting that the desire to teach is stronger than my dislike of the room. Once I have prepared, the room is no longer an obstacle.
