Chapter 9

Telling Your Story

Now that we’ve taken a look at the natural cycle of parenting that happens when moms and dads take the time to talk with their children on a regular basis, training them in the ways of God, pointing their hearts to the One who really can make a difference in their lives, let’s see if there are any principles within Moses’ message to the parents of Israel that can profoundly impact the way we parent our children today. (Hint: There are!)

Not surprisingly, we see the basic conversation within the cycle of parenting we looked at in Psalm 78 also mapped out for us in Deuteronomy 6. Don’t you think that the fact that the Psalmist relayed a cycle that Moses initially mapped out was indicative that it was a very effective way of teaching them diligently?

Do you remember the conversation Moses modeled for us in Deuteronomy 6:20–25? It started with, “When your son asks you in time to come ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the Lord our God has commanded you?’ ” (ESV), you should tell him the following:

1. We were slaves in Egypt, and the Lord miraculously brought us out.

2. His plan was to bring us to the land He had promised to our people generations before.

3. After He brought us out of Egypt, He gave us laws, instituted celebrations to help us remember what He had done for us, and to help us live the way that pleases Him.

So, as Moses was laying the foundation for God’s people to Teach Their Children Diligently, he was instructing them in exactly how to talk to their children. He wanted them to share their story with their kiddos, because through sharing the story of their past, where they had come from, and where they were going, their children were being taught great truths and given great hope that the same God at work in times past was still with them.

So, how does that correspond to talking to our children in the church age in which we all live? Pretty closely, actually. Let’s take a look.

Although we teach our children about the plagues, the exodus from Egypt, the wilderness wanderings, and the eventual arrival into the Promised Land, those are not “our” stories. No. By God’s amazing grace, we have an even more intimate and powerful story to tell our children. By following the template Moses laid out for us, let’s see how telling our children our story can be used mightily to strengthen their faith and lead them to a heart knowledge and relationship with God — and to even having their own story to pass on to their children one day. It’s pretty amazing how closely our own story was modeled for us by God’s work for the children of Israel. Adding your own unique details to the overall story will allow your children to get an up-close-and-personal look at the work of God and to get to know you even better.
