Chapter 17

Wade reached the ranch and pulled in front of the brood mare’s barn. Jack’s pickup was parked there.

He got out of the warm cab and hurried inside. It was a little warmer, but not by much.

“Jack, are you in here?” he called.

“Yeah. Down here with Maiden Lady.”

“What are you doing back? I didn’t expect to see you for two more days,” he said, hurrying down the alley to the mare’s stall.

“Yeah, well, Tom got married and I didn’t know it. Him and his wife didn’t mind me staying, but watching them together was just a twist of the knife. I visited for a while and told them I needed to get back. I feel better being here.”

“Because of Sara?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Okay. How’s Lady?”

“Fine. She’s even perked up a bit in this cold weather. Where as I want to curl up on the couch with a heavy blanket and watch a good western or war movie.”

“That does sound like a plan. She’s looking pretty good, isn’t she?” Wade asked, nodding toward the prized mare.

“She is now. A month or two ago I was beginning to wonder if she was going to keep this foal.”

“Me, too. I know fifty-thousand isn’t a lot for some ranches to drop to artificially inseminate a mare, but it’s a lot for me. I’m counting on this one to be a stud and like his daddy.”

“If he turns out like you think he will, your name could become a household word at ranches all over Texas and the Southwest. Maybe even farther.”

“That’s what I’m hoping. I’ve got a lot riding on that little baby.”

“We’ll keep a close eye on Lady. She had a bit of a rough patch, but she’s doing good now.”

“Thanks, Jack. I really appreciate your hard work and expertise here at the ranch.”

“Hey, you pay me well for it,” Jack said, laughing.

“I know. But I still appreciate it.”

“You’re welcome, boss. But one of these days I’m going to have my own ranch. You know I’ve put money down on the old Henderson place. I’ll eventually have to move there and work it, for it to succeed.”

“I know, and I dread that day. But you’re a good man, Jack, and a good rancher. You deserve your own place.”

“I appreciate you saying that. And we’ll continue to help each other out.”

“Sure we will.”

Jack went back to work, checking on the mare in the next stall.

“Jack?”

“Yeah?”

“I wanted to tell you I’m sorry about the way I acted when I walked in on you and Charlie, that day.”

“I take the blame on that one. It was me. Charlie had nothing to do with it.”

“It doesn’t matter. I have no hold on her. She can do as she pleases.”

“But you want it to be more, am I right?”

“It’d be nice. But it’s not what she wants. She told me the other day she wants to be friends. And that’s going to be tough around someone like her.”

“Sorry, Wade. I can sympathize with you, but at least you know where she is,” Jack said, on a sad note, as he went back to work.
