Sage refuses to be intimidated. She insists on opening the store at ten like normal. Her sister arrives, and I’m glad to see Sage’s spunk back, even though she argues vehemently that Raven should be off her feet.

On crutches, Raven isn’t much help with customers, but she’s an extra pair of eyes. I’m reassured that the spells on the property will keep harmful people away, but I still feel better knowing the siblings are together and Sage has someone watching her back. I promise to check on them later.

Meanwhile, Logan and I fill in my dad on what’s happening. Logan found the padlock missing from the exterior cellar doors, so he asks Bis to grab one from his inventory and replace it. Bis also takes Zultan to his workshop to examine the interior.

As soon as we explain to Daddy what’s transpired, he rightfully guesses this is tied to my request to run a background check on Madam X. He promises to do so as soon as possible with the limited amount of info we have. I give him the names of the two people who were upset that Sage shared with me, and he agrees to give each a call and feel them out.

While he and Logan discuss other measures to keep my friend safe, I call Rhys and quiz him about anything Madam X may have shared regarding her previous residence or employer.

“You know what I know,” he tells me. “Like I said, she came from Romania and hasn’t been here long.”

“She’s not Romanian, and I think she may be involved in threats directed towards Sage.”

“What? I don’t believe it. Is this why you guys tore out of The Toad last night like someone had set your backsides on fire?”

“I’m not accusing her of anything yet, so please don’t mention this to her. The timing of her arrival is suspicious, and we are being overly cautious.”

I can almost see him pacing his kitchen floor. “This, on top of Todd’s death?” His pause is weighted and he sighs heavily. “We needed new blood, something different than what we already had to draw customers back. She seemed like the ticket.”

“What do you mean draw customers back?”

“I didn’t want to say anything, but ever since Sage opened, our psychics have seen a significant drop in clientele. Two of them couldn’t afford their last booth rent and it’s only fifty dollars. For a whole month! That’s how bad it’s been. I’m happy she’s successful, but it’s put a dent in our business. That, combined with this heat wave keeping people at home, has caused our bottom line to take a big hit. Now Todd’s death… We’re going to be in the red soon.”

I’d had no idea. “I’m so sorry. Is there anything I can do?”

“Not screw up our new act. Seriously, Ava. Make sure you have solid proof before you discredit Madam X. Even if she’s eventually found innocent, you know what the gossip in this town will do to her. She’s put down three months’ fee for her booth.
