Afterwards we walked down the hill into the backyard where we carefully arranged ourselves in designated chairs around two tables under the long-legged roof that was still holding good. This wobbly roof gave the guarantee that should rain come suddenly, which looked very likely, we would not all have to run for cover carrying our food, all pre-plated to reduce any unnecessary intermingling. We were safely distanced, so conversation was carried on in raised voices. Not greatly conductive to togetherness, but all achievable.

Due to Covid-19 Conor Michael’s christening day could not follow the usual format, but nevertheless would be remembered as a special occasion when twelve of us cel­ebrated at a distance around separate tables. Such a different form of community, but a community nonetheless.
