Tanner sat in the front room of the house he was staying in, watching Mark as he lay unconscious on the settee. He’d been lying there for the last few hours, Tanner not knowing if he was going to ever wake up. A cobra bite was deadly, but Mark was in tiger form when it happened. A tiger could potentially survive the attack. But could his brother?

Tanner had told Lisandra everything Mark had said to him, and then she brought a healer to the house. She didn’t confirm anything but said she wanted Mark alive so she could question him herself. Tanner didn’t want to betray Mark, but he could never keep anything from Lisandra. She had too much power over him. The healer had worked for a while, attempting to extract the poison using a powerful spell, then left two hours ago. He said they just had to wait and see if Mark lived. Tanner had been sitting there, waiting, since then. He didn’t want Mark to die, but seeing him again caused him a lot of pain.

He got up from the table he was sitting at and walked across the small room, moving to stand by the window. He ran a hand through his short hair, sighing deeply. How was Mark involved in all of this? Who were his friends, the ones who sent him? How did they know what Lisandra was doing? It was all so strange. He really didn’t think he’d see Mark ever again, despite being back in Prentor. He wasn’t going to seek him out. The last thing he expected was Mark coming to him. Not after the last time they’d spoken.

Tanner heard Mark make a muffled groan, and he turned, going to his side. He stood over him, watching Mark slowly open his eyes, blinking up at him.

Mark tried to sit up. Seeing his ankle, he screamed, “What is that!” He lay back down, one arm stretched out towards his left leg where his ankle has been tightly bandaged.

Tanner brought a chair to Mark’s side and sat down. “You were bitten by a cobra, while you were in tiger form,” Tanner said bluntly. “It happened a few hours ago. A healer has seen you and used magic to try to heal you. I wasn’t sure if you’d wake up, but here you are. You’re lucky to be alive.”

Mark frowned at him, his eyes narrowed. He lay his head back down. “The witch—Lisandra—she shifted into a cobra?” he asked quietly.

Tanner nodded. “Yes. She’ll likely be back soon to question you. I had to tell her what you said to me.”

“Why?” Mark exclaimed, forcing himself to sit, his legs still stretched out before him. “Couldn’t you just lie to her? And why are we just sitting here—I need to go home—I need to transport out of here. If I can get to where I left my horse…”

“You can’t even stand and you want to ride?” Tanner asked. “You can transport out, but you’d have to hide somewhere until you’re well enough to travel home.
