Chapter 12: Lily

I stared at the door for a long time, worried about Nathaniel, wondering if I should go after him. I felt paralyzed when I thought about going into the woods again after the pale, faceless man I had encountered had filled me with fear. I stood up to stare out the window, slipping into a robe and peering around outside. My eyes caught on a giant wolf trotting through the street, so big he seemed to be half the size of the huts. He shifted when he saw me and hurried to my hut, where I opened the door to let him in, making sure that we made no contact on the way.

“You came back,” I said, beaming up at him, so happy to see him that I felt like I could burst from excitement. I had been afraid for a moment that he wouldn’t come back, that every time he lost control would be the last time I would ever see him. I wanted desperately to touch and kiss him but instead I stood back, just looking up at his face.

“I came back,” he said, finally smiling in return, his whole face lighting up.

“To have a slumber party?” I asked him. He lifted an eyebrow as he stared at me.

“A slumber party?”

“Yeah. I want you to spend the night,” I said to him. His face went serious, almost grim.

“Lily, I would kill to sleep next to you. You have no idea. But I can’t.”

“No, it’s okay. We’re going to sleep on the floor. You wouldn’t fit in my bed, anyway.”

“Good point. But you don’t need to sleep on the floor,” he pointed out. “I will. It’s fine.”

“No, it’s not a slumber party unless we’re both on the floor,” I said, grabbing the pillows off the bed and tossing them to the ground before stripping the blanket from the mattress and spreading it out on the floor. I sat down and he sat opposite, a few inches away from me.

“So what now?” he asked.

“Now we’re supposed to tell each other secrets,” I said. “Or gossip.”

“Gossip about who?” he asked. “Or what?”

“Hmm,” I hummed and thought. “There’s something going on with Sophie and Gabriel.”

He laughed.

“Yeah, there is. Is that what we’re gossiping about?”

“Do you know anything about them?” I asked him. He shook his head.

“Alarick and I aren’t exactly buddies.”

“Whatever it is, Sophie is pissed. Every time someone brings him up, she gets irritated.”

“I could see why she would feel that way,” he said. “I don’t suppose Gabriel is particularly romantic.”

I laughed. “Probably not. He’s kind of an asshole.”

“I think he’s a good man. He just takes everything too seriously.”

“And you don’t?” I asked him. “You’re the most serious person I know.”

“Yeah, but I’m romantic,” he said. I giggled in response.

“Yeah?”

“Oh, definitely. I’m sweeping you off your feet right now.”

“Always,” I said to him, looking him in the eye. He smiled at me and reached forward to push a piece of hair out of my face.

“Was that all the gossip you have?” he asked.
