SCENE I48

THE ORATORIO

AÉLIS enters after PAGE 154, the Side Hall.

d’ANNUNZIO

Treason lives in Roma! In the city of the soul, in the city of light!

AÉLIS

You promised there’d be no more speeches.

d’ANNUNZIO

(quietly) It was nothing new.

AÉLIS

(crossing to pulpit) That’s irrelevant —

d’ANNUNZIO

It’s more relevant than it ever was. (comes down the pulpit steps and goes to AÉLIS)

AÉLIS

(hugging him) Our house is tied to your silence!

d’ANNUNZIO

Shhh! I’ve taken a vow of silence . . . at least for tonight.

d’ANNUNZIO kisses AÉLIS. He begins exiting the Oratorio. As he passes his tomb, he spits on it.

AÉLIS

(following d’ANNUNZIO to the Oratorio doors, then turning to the audience) Ladies and gentlemen, after what you just witnessed, I’m certain you’ll understand that Il Comandante needs his privacy. If you will follow me, I have asked Dante to lay out some refreshments for you.

AÉLIS guides d’ANNUNZIO and the audience into the Dining Room. d’ANNUNZIO and AÉLIS exit as soon as they can from the Dining Room and head for their own INTERMEZZO. To find out where they begin Act Two, turn to DANTE’s speech, PAGE 179.
