Chapter 20

Talon

I’ve been up for a few hours now. At some point, I ended up dozing off sitting up and slept like that for about two hours. The alarm I set went off, but Ava slept through it. She was still peacefully snoozing, and I was about to wake her, but decided not to. She looked so comfortable balled up in the covers, and I didn’t want to disturb her. Who knows when the last time she got a good night's sleep was. For the last three weeks, we’ve been up late talking, so I know it hasn’t been within that time frame.

I thought she’d wake up before ten and we would still have enough time to get out of here, but ten a.m. came and went, and now it’s five in the evening. She’s still asleep. It threw our plans off, but I am glad I didn’t wake her–obviously she needed the rest.

I’ve been on my phone, ignoring the text and calls from Flint and Blaze, focused on checking out places to eat while I wait for her to wake up. I was going to order in but held off, not knowing when she’d get up. I didn’t want it to get cold.

I figured it’d be better to just hold off, and since we aren’t going anywhere tonight, we’ll have time to actually take our time and eat. I have it narrowed down to a few places, but I’ll let her decide where she wants to order from when she wakes up.

I know she’s hungry–her stomach has been growling since I’ve been awake. When I first heard how loud her stomach was talking, I wondered how that alone wasn’t waking her up, but then it dawned on me that she’s probably used to being hungry. It’s like the more I think about what she went through, the harder it’s going to be for me to let her go because I want to take care of her, and make sure she doesn’t know or encounter any of that shit again.

A soft groan comes from the bed, and I look over to find Ava stretching. Everything going on on my phone no longer matters, and I find myself a little excited that she’s stirring. Another few hours with her, I’ll take it.

She turns over onto her stomach, then she quickly flips back over and sits up, startled, looking around, her eyes wide. As soon as she finds me sitting on the couch, she stills, staring at me.

I smile at her as she takes short breaths, trying to calm herself down.

“Morning,” I greet her, pretending like I didn’t notice her panic. “Well, evening.”

She looks confused at my correction, then looks at the clock on the nightstand beside her.

“Shit,” she breathes out. “I didn’t mean to sleep that long.”

“You needed it,” I point out, watching her push her hair out of her face.

“I didn’t realize how tired I was,” she says, her eyes locked on the covers on her lap before she throws them to the side.
