Tallac woke to find himself covered in cougar paws and heads and tails. Shadows filled the interior of the frigid cabin, and outside the wind blew furiously, but his immortal senses told him it was yet daylight. He saw blankets covering the windows, and looked over at Jo, who lay huddled under his tartan on the floor between him and the dying embers in the hearth.

She had her rifle beside her, and was sleeping with one hand on the barrel, just as her grandfather might have with a sword. She looked young and helpless like this, which stirred something in him. Her face had grown so pale the shadows under her tangled lashes looked like bruises. She might have gone to her bed, but she’d chosen to stay by his side.

I’m not ever sleeping with you.

As quietly as he could he rose and went to the window, risking a quick look outside before he opened the door a few inches. Even with the blizzard besieging the cabin the sunlight made his cold skin start to smolder. The cougars all rose and came to stand before him to sniff the air rushing in through the gap, and then began rubbing their heads against his leg. One by one they silently filed out of the cabin, bounding through the deep drifts as they headed into the trees.

As Tallac closed the door and bolted it, he wondered if he would ever see them again. Unlike him they would thrive on this world.

He reached up to feel the wadding Jo had wrapped around his head, and tugged it away. Flakes of dried blood sifted from his hair to the floor, and he dragged his fingers through the tangled mess as he walked over to the darksilver. The MacKers by now would be safely away; he’d had them build a trail out of the woods to the main road where he’d arranged for Jacyn’s Terran allies to be waiting with trucks to move them to the city safehold. He would have to take Jo through first and explain everything once they were on Teren, he thought, and reached to open the mirror gate.

An antler fell onto the floor, revealing a bullet hole and a large crack in the frame.

Tallac went still, holding his hands a mere inch from the darksilver. The gates contained magic that the crystals in the frame had been bespelled to control. He was able to open and close the passage between the two worlds, but he had never attempted to do so with one that had been damaged. He bent down to pick up the antler, and carefully replaced it. As he touched the frame he could still feel the cold humming of the magic within the gate. If it were going to collapse it would have done so already, and Jo and the cabin would be blasted bits littering the forest. As he pressed his palms over the bespelled crystals in the frame, the glass did not shift into its liquified state.
