WRITE A NARRATIVE FOR YOURSELF

Stories resonate with people. It was the way we communicated and shared ideas with one another long before the written word was even invented. Our brains are nicely tuned to work with stories, especially if they have a clear beginning, middle and end. The story of an idea, a discovery, a battle, a struggle, success and failure are all appealing narratives, and creating one for yourself can set up future successes when building a business or project that you’re trying to sell to investors, future employers or collaborators.

The Head-Over was my first story. I had stumbled across an idea, followed through with research and development, overcome the doubters, jumped the hurdles and carried a successful prototype over the line. As we shall see, the narrative created a strong reputation for me within BP and beyond, opening doors to different opportunities in the future. It also propelled me along a path to a point where I now run an international jet suit business.

An interesting story of creativity or adventure is a great way to show our drive to the world.
