Chapter 13

Mina

I listen as his footsteps retreat from the room. I hate how pitiful and clingy I sound, but I can’t help it. I’m so worried something might happen to Erolas, and I’d be unable to help him.

I pray I’ll blink and my eyesight will return, but it hasn’t. Not yet. I haven’t given up hope, but I can’t deny that I’m worried. What if it never returns? I can’t imagine being stuck on this world and unable to see.

I’m sure Erolas is tired of having to take care of me, despite what he claims. And if he isn’t, I know it will probably get on his nerves, sooner rather than later.

I sweep my hand out and carefully pull back the several layers of fur on the bed and snuggle beneath them. He was right about the l’sair crystals. The house is already beginning to warm. It’s actually pleasant in here.

As I lie down, I listen for him to return, praying he’s safe.

It feels like forever before I hear him again. Already, I recognize the cadence of his booted steps when he walks through the house and back into the bedroom.

The bed dips beside me, and he takes my hand. “This bedding is made of two mattresses. I can pull them apart if you—”

“No. I trust you.”

He’s silent for so long, I wonder what he’s thinking, but after a moment, I hear him remove his boots, then the mattress shifts beside me as he lies down.

I reach for him, and he takes my hand. I scoot toward him, and he turns onto his side for me to curl up against him. He is so warm. His torso is still bare, I notice—his chest and abdomen a solid wall of thick, sculpted muscle.

My heart rate quickens when he wraps his arms around me and pulls me even closer, gently nuzzling my hair. It feels like an affectionate gesture, but I cannot be sure. Maybe it’s a cultural thing among his people. After all, he is as much an alien to me as I am to him.

I do know one thing for sure: as he carefully tucks the fur blankets around me, I am falling for this man whom I barely know. Already, I trust him with my life, but now, I find myself wondering: can I trust him with my heart, too?

“Rest, Mina,” he whispers against me. “We are safe here.”

Closing my eyes, I allow myself to fall away into sleep.
