Juliet, her mom, had been miserable ever since, and the only time that she would see her smile was when she was beating her. She didn’t understand why her mother was like that, why she was obsessed hurting her. Sure, she had gone through difficult times in her life for being a single mom, for raising her on her own, but she just couldn’t fathom the source of her hatred towards her. It seemed deeply rooted.

She was a jinx, alright. Her mother lost her job multiple times since she was born. She had to jump from one job to another, taking multiple jobs at a time, just to make their ends meet. She had long wished to find a man who could provide their needs, but every time she would bring a man in their house, he would leave. And her mother would blame her for being a jinx, a curse that she had badly wanted to discard.

The beating stopped when she grew taller than her mom, but it was replaced with even more painful form of emotional battery. True enough, verbal abuse hurt more than physical pain. Her ears wouldn’t only bleed every time her mom would nag her, she would break her heart, too. Her mother had successfully trampled her spirit, made her feel as if she was the lowest form of creature by hurling her all sorts of ugly insults and painful words.
