Chapter Eight

Lia couldn’t believe what he’d said. She’d relegated herself to not being good enough for so long that the possibility she might be didn’t make sense. She wasn’t meant for the court. Yet, he thought she was.

“How?” she asked, repeating her question. “Because she gave me this?” She held up the medallion.

“I can’t see what you’re holding, but probably.” He wove through the fallen pieces of tree on the street, then sped to the woods. He didn’t look over at her until he’d turned onto the dirt path leading to the cabin.

“What did Diesel say?” she asked. “Michael?”

He pulled into the carport and stopped the engine. “I’ll tell you once we’re inside.”

“Is it bad?” Did she have to brace herself?

“No.”

“No?” That didn’t seem right.

He cast a spell on the shelter, then unlocked the door to the cabin and placed another on the home. “Promise, it’s not bad.” He rushed to close the door behind her. “I want to be in the cabin when we talk.”

She detected the fear in his voice. “Sure.” She waited for him to lock up. As she waited, she kicked out of her shoes. “Well?”

“Holy shit.” He sighed. “Fuck.”

“Casting those spells takes a lot out of you?” she asked. She clutched the medallion and sank onto the sofa.

“It does, but that’s not it.” He knelt in front of her on the floor and slipped her clenched hands into his. “It’s about your situation.”

“Hades,” she murmured. “Okay?”

“The Elves targeted you. They did it to get what they wanted,” he said. “It was a set-up.”

She wanted to speak, but the words were gone. A set-up? It made sense, but yet didn’t.

“First, the Elves knew they could target you because they knew you have a reputation as a siren,” Michael said. “Then they jumped on the idea that you’re considered to be a certain kind of woman because of how you dress, and they took advantage of your vulnerability. They knew you take what happens personally and they used it to their own gain.”

Her stomach lurched. She should’ve known. Nothing in her life happened for a good reason. Maybe meeting Michael, but she wasn’t so sure.

“The good thing is that the queen has eyes on them. They did what they did, and she knows -- well, Diesel knows -- and it’s not going unnoticed.”

Her hand burned around the medallion. “Is that why I wasn’t arrested?”

“Yes. You aren’t guilty, so there’s no reason for it.” He crinkled his brow. “I’d never lie to you.”

She knew he wouldn’t, but the whole thing sounded so terrible.

“I’m serious. The court knows what you didn’t do and what they did do,” he said. “And they know you’re innocent.”

She needed a second. She wasn’t guilty? It couldn’t be possible. She frowned and loosened her grasp on the medallion. The court had been watching her? They knew what she’d done? Holy Hades. What if they’d seen everything? She buried her face in her hands.

He petted her hair. “You’re safe, Babe.”

She believed him, but the whole situation seemed impossible.
