Chapter 9

Steph had just gotten out of the shower and dressed when there was a knock on her door. It was still quite early, so she was a bit surprised. Nobody usually bothered her until later in the day, if at all. She wasn’t a part of clan life, and she had no intention of ever becoming a part of it either, so Steph kept to herself as much as possible. For a few weeks after arriving at the estate she had actively sought Jack out and tried to force him to let her leave, usually by screaming and being in his face whenever he was working or having guests. But after suffering his fists a number of times she changed her strategy. Staying in her room as much as possible, she planned her escape. She only left her room for food or to gather information that might help her get out of there.

“I’m coming.” She used her crutches to get to the door. Opening it she stared up into Jack’s face.

He glanced at what she was wearing and narrowed his eyes at her. “Going somewhere?”

Steph sighed. She had used her loose-fitting shorts last night, so her clothing options were now reduced to one. A deep blue dress with a plunging neckline. It was way too formal for everyday use, but with no other choice she had put it on. “It’s all I’ve got that will fit at the moment.” She lifted her injured leg to support her explanation. “I’ll do some laundry today, but I really need a couple of loose-fitting pants to wear.”

Jack’s grin took her aback and she was just getting ready to retreat into her room and close the door in his face when he spoke.

“That’s easily solved. It’s part of the reason I’m here actually. Come with me.”

Jack’s suddenly good mood had her reeling. It was never a good sign in her experience. Steph wanted to stay in her room, but she knew what would happen if she disobeyed a direct order.

They moved through the house with Jack leading the way, ending up outside the door to his office on the ground floor. He turned to her like he wanted to say something, but then he seemed to change his mind and opened the door instead. Jack moved to the side and motioned for her to enter ahead of him, and Steph felt her apprehension rising. She had no idea what to expect.

On entering the room, she stopped as her eyes landed on a woman sitting in Jack’s office chair. Swinging her gaze to Jack, Steph was surprised to see him smiling at the woman. She would have expected Jack to react with anger on seeing someone using his chair, but there was only delight, perhaps even a bit of awe, in his gaze. Steph felt her trepidation grow. This couldn’t be good. Anyone eliciting that kind of reaction from Jack was someone to fear.

“Ah, so this is the famous Stephanie.” The woman’s husky voice drew Steph’s eyes to her almost like she had been issued an order to do so.
