Chapter Seven

Maybe he shouldn’t have forced the change. As he watched his mate struggle between his best friend and hers he thought, for the first time, that he’d made the wrong choice with her, again. He’d just wanted her next to him. Without a doubt leaving Maddy had been the hardest thing he’d ever done, but he swore to everything that was holy that he’d thought he’d been doing the right thing. So many nights he’d wanted nothing but to come back to her side.

When he’d first left, every second had been a struggle not to race back and get her. To go back and explain everything. But when the wolves had gone public and mates had started dying, he knew he couldn’t go back if he wanted to keep her safe. To make a place for the Silver Pack that she could one day reside in by his side. He’d chosen not to live within Seurri City walls because inside those walls she’d be separated from all that she loved. She wouldn’t be able to see her friends, her family. The world she knew would be over. The wolves weren’t safe enough to travel too much outside of the one city the whole world was watching for a mistake. The Silver Pack and a handful of other packs who resided outside of the walls could blend in, live among humans, or within their own patch of land with little notice.

He’d made every decision with her in mind. Of course, she wouldn’t see it that way. She wouldn’t give him a chance to explain, and it was his fault. He knew that, but it didn’t change the irritation his wolf felt that he couldn’t hold his mate, couldn’t show her all the beauty in their world. The wolf didn’t understand the human mind like that. It simply wanted its mate, the one wolf made for it from all other wolves in the world. And Connor wanted the same. He wanted her to smile at him again, to run her fingers through his hair as she fell asleep. To kiss his forehead when he was deep in thought and make his heart lighter. He wanted so many things.

With those thoughts in his head he eased around Lawrence, who’d been sure to do nothing but block Maddy’s attack and do no real damage, and come to Sasha’s side. Though Cirro had never changed into a leopard, he still would protect his mate with everything that he was, and so Connor had to tread lightly.

“Let me have her, Sasha. She’s fighting the bond. You know what that can do to a shifter. That’s why she’s so confused. I know I hurt her, but I swear I’ll never do it again. Give me a chance to make it right. You know as her mate, bonded now, I can’t hurt her anymore. It’s impossible.”

He stood, waiting, as Sasha stared, ready to pounce at the slightest show of aggression from him. Sasha, of all the females Connor had met so long ago, had taken to her transformation as if she had always been.
