Considering Jake and I got back so late, the rest of the day goes by quickly. I stay until past six because I want to get as much work done as possible. I eventually have to admit defeat, though, because this graph will not be done by today—or even tomorrow.

I watch as Jake wanders over a little while after, that sexy swagger only he can pull off. “Can I follow you home to make sure you get back okay? I have those car seats and mats still in my car. I can take them up for you.”

I smile and say, “Thank you, that would be nice.” He looks shocked, as though he was expecting a fight. I know Jessie will be home when I get there so I feel fairly confident that nothing will happen between us.

We get to Jessie’s, and Jake swiftly retrieves everything out of his car for me. The elevator ride’s a little uncomfortable, but it’s quick, which is a godsend. Jessie is a little stunned when we both walk in.

“Well, hello, Mr. Bennett. What do we owe the pleasure? And how did the interview go with that waitress?”

She looks smug, causing me to glare daggers at her. I’m behind Jake and frantically waving my hand in front of my neck to tell her to cut it out. Unfortunately, Jake notices me doing something in the corner of his eye and turns to look at me. I zip my hand away, smiling, but he’s already caught me doing something—although by the frown on his face, he doesn’t know what exactly.

“It went well,” he replies, tuning back to talk to Jessie. “She remembered a lot of detail, so that helped.”

Jessie smirks mischievously. “Ooo, I bet she did.”

I roll my eyes and sag my shoulders before standing beside Jake. I can’t believe Jessie’s doing this to me.

Jake, bewildered yet never missing a beat, glances at both of us before asking, “Am I missing something here?”

I glare at Jessie not to say anything, but I know that isn’t going to happen. “Ana thought you made quite an impression on her.”

Jake peeks over to me, smiling. “Really? So how did that make you feel?”

I take in a deep breath, before saying, “I really hate you, Jessie.” They both erupt in laughter, but I don’t find any of it amusing.

Jake, knowing he’s taken it as far as he can, holds up the mats. “Where would you like me to put these? Somewhere close to Mr. Brator, perhaps?”

Or maybe not.

I almost die of embarrassment. Jessie breaks out in hysterics as Jake stands there looking rather pleased with himself. I feel my face flush a bright pink, and judging by the smug look on Jake’s face, he’s loving every minute of it.

“I thought you would figure it out,” Jessie cheers, panting through her laugher.

“I must say, I wasn’t too thrilled about the idea,” Jake begins. “You always know where to find me … if you need me,” he says, with a cheeky grin.

“Yeah, Ana, remember our conversation?” Jessie replies, laughing again.
