Hey, I never intended to call the game, but once I was up in that booth I had a blast. I made sure the fans had a blast, too.

After all those early screwups, everything turned out to be great. We sent the cheerleaders out to the field again in between plays, and although they got booed again, it wasn’t nearly as bad. Before long, the booing stopped altogether. So that saved us a couple of grand in therapy sessions for the ladies.

And the game itself? Man, it was great. Lots of action, lots of scoring, lots of incredible goals. In the end it was a barn burner, with the Nationals winning 23–21.

As for Casey Powell, he played beautifully. Once he got on the field, all the nervousness went away. With a lacrosse stick in his hand, the kid is an artist. He sure created a real work of art that day.

Game One of our Summer Showcase was over. The fans streamed down to the field, happy as clams. All of our players stuck around and signed autographs until every last kid was safely tucked away in the back of an SUV. Everyone told us how great it was to be able to see these players play. We all had a real feeling of accomplishment, and we couldn’t wait for Game Two in Philadelphia. I packed up my trusty Hawaiian shirt and hoped that we’d worked out all the kinks with Game One.

That, my friends, is what you call wishful thinking.
