My shoes create a permanent path in the carpet of the family room floor while we wait for the doctor to fill us in on Dylanâs condition. Since Iâm an employee of the hospital, no one would let me anywhere near him, and none of the nurses would tell me what was happening. The door opens, and the doctor finally walks in.
âWe got a heartbeat,â the doctor says.
âOh, thank God,â I say with a sigh of relief.
âHeâs still in critical condition, but weâre doing everything we can to make sure he pulls through.â
âThank you, doctor,â Mark replies.
âThe paramedic found this on his bed. It seems he left a note for you two.â
Mark grabs the note. âThank you. We didnât even notice,â he says.
âYou did good, Amy. He might not have made it if you had not found him when you did.â
âThank you,â I answer. Iâm not familiar with this doctor. He usually doesnât work my shift, but word spreads quickly around the ER. It isnât surprising that he knows Iâm a nurse here.
âIâll be back when you two can see him.â
He leaves the room, and Mark opens the letter and reads it out loud.
Mom and Dad,
Iâm sorry, but I canât live like this any longer. Iâm tired of hiding who I really am, and Iâd rather leave this earth than continue living a lie. Iâm gay, and Iâve been attracted to boys ever since I can remember. I never told you because I knew you wouldnât understand. I met someone I really liked, but heâs sick. Heâs HIV-positive. Iâll answer the question youâre both asking in your heads. Yes, I slept with him unprotected, so there is a possibility that I too can be HIV-positive. So, instead of shaming the family and dealing with a death sentence, I decided to end my own life.
Mom, please donât be too sad, and please forgive me, but this is best. I know you would have accepted me regardless and continued to love me, but I couldnât make your marriage to Dad miserable because of my choices. You know he wouldnât have accepted me. Thank you for always supporting me, and I love you. Dad, you were right. I was a faggot, and Iâm nothing like you. But thatâs okay. I love you anyway. Please donât be sad. This is what is best. Please tell Ireland Iâm sorry for not having her back and that I love her so much.

So much has happened this past week. I found evidence that my husband may be cheating on me, and I found out he slept with someone else the night before our wedding. I havenât slept in days. I havenât eaten and can barely keep it together for the kids. I sat down with my mother, and she admitted that Shanice had confided in her about Sheldon and Crystal. Yet, neither of them thought it was necessary to tell me about it. Instead, both allowed me to walk down the aisle with a liar and a cheater.
