CHAPTER 13

I focused inward, but the thread remained dark. I could see and feel it, but it would not respond to my summons. It was as if there were a shroud around me and only my necro power could penetrate it. Was this what the pendant had done? Fed this dark bubble of power that only I could feel? “It won’t work. My powers are a mess.”

Amalie sat forward in her seat. “Try again. Our children will die if the gates fail.”

I punched through the invisible bubble and forced my power into it. My magic pulsed and there was a rumbling sound before a rat with its ribcage showing exited a crack in the wall and scurried toward me. “Shit.”

Alaric stood and pointed at the rodent. “She is using dark magic. It is forbidden to raise animals. She is the one working with the demons.”

Magnus stood abruptly and stared at the rodent that sat on its haunches and stared up at me as if awaiting a command. “That is impossible. No human has possessed such power.”

Daryn put his hand on his sica blade. “Alaric, if you accuse Shannon of being a traitor, then you are accusing me. She cannot perform dark magic while bonded to me. You know this. Choose your next words carefully or I will cut you down where you sit. Accusing the hunter leader of treachery without premise is a death sentence.”

Alaric’s eyes widened, and he sputtered before Magnus held up a hand. “Alaric spoke in haste and fear. I did not feel the presence of dark magic and I would have if she used a dark necro power. I believe her when she says her powers are unstable, but they must be stabilized soon or she will become a danger to herself and others.”

Reginald pointed at the rat at my feet. “What do we do with it now? The council is warded. Will your sica work on it?”

I knelt down and held my hand out. “Return to your resting place. I did not mean to call you.” My apologies to the dead were piling up, and the rat turned and scampered back to the wall in which it had exited. “It has returned. I am not trying to raise the animals, but they do listen when I ask them to return.”

Magnus’ eyes narrowed on me. “The dead animals do your bidding. Not just answer your call?”

“Yes, but I am trying to stop it from happening,” I reassured him.

“Can you raise a dead demon?”

The entire council turned to look at me, along with Daryn. Who would try such a thing, let alone ask it? “I would never try. Has anyone done that before?”

Magnus glanced at Alaric, and the leader of the council looked uncomfortable. He had said nothing to Magnus when the necro council member had accused Alaric of talking out of turn and jumping to conclusions. It made me wonder what kind of relationship the two had. “The dark witch attempted to raise a demon, but was unsuccessful.
