Letty steadied herself in the saddle. Her hip hurt from the fall, but that was just a bruise. The real danger was in her mind, and possibly her heart.

She’d thought he was going to die.

But that wasn’t the thing that bothered her. What bothered her was how much she cared.

Somehow, this red-headed stranger she’d found on the beach had become dear to her. So dear, that the sight of him pale, sweating and gasping for breath had brought a wild panic, a fear so deep she could not see its end. She would have done anything, anything, In that moment, if it meant he would live.

London. Abolition. That was what she was meant to do. Not fall in love with some Scottish earl.

How stupid she’d been to allow herself two nights in his arms. She’d told herself it was for the release, the peace that came after her climax . . . but on the way, she’d found pleasure, dangerous, distracting pleasure that threatened to make her forget who she was. And instead of pushing it away as she should have, she’d welcomed it.

She needed to be rid of him. Forget about him. Leave him to his fate and regain her focus.

Finally, the road widened a bit, smoothed out, and they were in the suburbs of the city, then Valladolid itself. The humble wood and thatch homes gave way to stucco and tile. The street was choked with carreteras, calesas, and muleteers. Shopkeepers swept the sidewalks while women bustled through with children in tow. Men stumbled in and out of the cantinas.

Letty allowed Cameron to draw his mule up beside hers, then take the lead. She followed him onto a quieter street, then another, threading their way through the neighborhoods until finally he stopped before a large red house. It was only one-story, like all the houses in this city, built in the Spanish style with a tile roof and unimpressive, plain exterior. Based on the neat appearance and the width of the place, Letty guessed that inside it was quite grand. The MacGregors were probably one of the richest families in Valladolid.

“This is it.” Cameron made no move to dismount. “Before we go in, I need to ask you—”

“No.” She choked on the word, but she got it out.

“But you don’t even know what I’m—”

“Lord Banton?” The voice came from behind them. An American accent. Letty turned to see a middle-aged white woman walking toward them. She was finely dressed in a cotton gown with lace on the neck and sleeves and an elegantly plumed bonnet. “It is you. You’ve returned!” The woman swept past Letty, all her attention on Cameron. “We must call the boys, and John.”

“The boys are here?” Cameron asked.

“Yes. They returned two days ago. Oh, and they’ll be so glad to see you.”

The next hour was a whirlwind as Cameron was swept off his mule and into the sala of the house—like a sitting room at home—then surrounded by an adoring MacGregor family.

Letty followed. She needed to collect her payment.
