CHAPTER EIGHT

“YOU will not strike me,” Marco said, his voice deep and quiet but laced with steely purpose, “ever again. I will not allow it. You understand?”

Amber stared into his eyes, determined not to drop her gaze and let him win, think he’d cowed her.

“I’m not a servant!” she said. “Or a child. You can’t—” give me orders. But he didn’t allow her to finish.

“Then do not act like a child,” he said.

He had a point—she’d never hit anyone since she was ten and Azure only seven and a quarrel had turned physical. Both of them ended up crying—not so much because the marks of Azure’s teeth were clearly visible on Amber’s arm, and Amber had a handful of Azure’s hair, but because they’d upset themselves by hurting each other. Now she felt a similar mixture of rage and misery. But she said, “Then don’t you act like a Neanderthal! Is that how Venezuelan men treat their women?”

“I did not harm you,” he argued. “Another man might have hit you back. I will never strike a woman.”

“You grabbed me to force me to do what you wanted.” She glared defiance, and perhaps it was surprise at her standing up to him that momentarily flickered in his eyes.

“I merely wished to suggest you stay a little longer. On my way here I passed Ana Maria and she knew you were already swimming. It would have looked odd if you left immediately after I joined you. I ‘grabbed’ you in play. At first I thought you too were playing.” The grimness in his expression was replaced by a rueful curve of his mouth. “I was not aware I had married a little hellcat.”

“I’m not!” Amber protested. “It’s years since I lost my temper like that.” She shifted but he still held her. “I suppose,” she admitted, “I overreacted. Sorry I hurt you.”

“De nada. It was nothing.” He paused, then said rather stiffly, “I also am sorry if I upset you.”

Amber gave a jerky nod of acknowledgement. He’d apologised, and she didn’t carry grudges.

“I think,” Marco said thoughtfully, “that I may have a bruise… right here.” Touching the skin just below his lower lip, he added lightly, “You could perhaps kiss it better, hmm?”

Amber went very still. There were a bare couple of centimetres between them, and she felt the heat of his body despite the cool water lapping about them.

“Is that not what you do after a quarrel?” he asked, scarcely above a whisper. “Kiss and make up?”

Somehow his words, and his almost nude body, so tan-talisingly close to hers with its flimsy, wet Lycra covering, created a potent, sensual aura that she couldn’t—didn’t want to—resist.

This man was her husband, unlikely though that had seemed only days ago. She had promised to give him her body, make love with him—or at least have sex.

“Well?” he queried softly, and she realised he was waiting for her to make the first move, trying to demonstrate to her that he wouldn’t coerce it.

Sometime she had
