After the awkward way Reese and I parted on Saturday, I’m unsure what to expect when I pick Elli up on Tuesday evening. The tutoring sessions seem to be working though, because Elli has been much more eager to read aloud. She appears to be remembering her math facts much faster, too.

I pause outside the door when I hear Elli and Reese laughing together. The sound does something funny to my heart.

I knock softly, and the door swings open revealing a smiling Elli. Her face is flushed with joy. “What are we celebrating?” I ask, raising a brow.

“I just remembered all my subtractions, Daddy!”

I pick her up and swing her around. “This calls for a celebration!” I pull her in for a hug, relieved that the tutoring is helping her. I’d hate for her to start third grade still struggling.

“Can we get burgers and a milkshake?” Elli asks, dancing in place.

“Of course, Elli girl. It’s your celebration.” I smile as she claps her hands together. “Reese, would you like to join us?” As soon as the invitation is out, my eyes snap to hers. What am I doing?

“Please, Ms. Reese. You have to come!” Elli sticks out her bottom lip and does her best puppy dog eyes. Those eyes have been the cause of way too many ice cream stops over the years.

“Well,” Reese hesitates. “Okay.”

“Yay! Best day EVER!” Elli hurriedly picks up the remnants of the game they were playing and puts the game back in Reese’s wagon.

“Can I help you take these things to your car?” My mom would be disappointed if I didn’t offer to help. It’s the gentlemanly thing to do. I’d do it for anyone. Not just because I feel drawn to her, I assure myself.

“Sure,” Reese gives me a half smile and reaches into her pocket. “Here are my keys. You can just put it in the trunk, if you don’t mind.”

Our fingers touch as I take the keys from her hand. Her eyes widen and find mine. I linger a bit too long, enjoying the feeling. It’s been so long since I reacted to someone, I just want to soak it in for a minute. Even if I have sworn off relationships, and Reese is ten years my junior.

She takes her hand back, wiping it on her denim shorts, and gives a nervous laugh. “I’ll be out in just a minute. I need to tell Samantha I’m done for the day.”

“C’mon Elli, let’s get Ms. Reese’s things stored away.”
