All seemed right in Robbie’s world as he walked over the Pont du Mont-Blanc and mulled over the status of the deal. He ran and re-ran through his mind how things were progressing from both a professional and a personal viewpoint. The supply from Thailand seemed secure. Cousin Somboon had dollar signs in his eyes and there was no reason why he shouldn’t perform. Similar dollar signs flashed in the head of the revolting black-toothed Jiang. By including the Chinese State Agricultural Corporation in the loop of the transaction, Robbie could mislead the market for a few critical days into believing that the purchases Clyde and Clyde were making were part of their ongoing business of supplying China. The whole market already knew about this, and therefore wouldn’t react by pushing up the price. By the time the market realised that China was just a dummy and that the sugar was in fact destined for Indonesia, which had a previously unknown and massive shortage, it would be too late. Clyde and Clyde would have locked in all the supplies they needed to supply Indonesia, and James Fang, Dr Amin and the President would all be extremely happy. Clyde and Clyde would make a killing on the transaction and Robbie would hopefully receive the biggest bonus of his life of over a million pounds and would slip gracefully into retirement. So far so good.

But it would get better. If Julia’s clandestine purchases of sugar futures were still going to plan, they would have a piggy bank full of the things by the end of the week. Once the market found out about Indonesia and the price took off they would sell the futures and rake in a profit of at least £5 million on the whole quick exercise. They would have to be extremely careful about concealing the funds. However, retirement could certainly be incredibly graceful with that much in the bank. Robbie looked around him as he strode along through the cool spring air. He was certainly in the right place to organise someone to look after his money.

Robbie’s feeling of contentment was enhanced by the mid-morning glass of whisky pressed on him by the gracious Monsieur Gerard as Robbie vacillated over his choice of cigar from M Gerard’s extensive stock. During the past ten years Robbie had developed a taste for the expensive pastime of smoking Cuban cigars and a relationship with Gerard et Fils. The latter had grown in direct correlation with the increasingly large amounts that Robbie spent on cigars chez Gerard during his frequent trips to Geneva. Robbie had finally chosen a box of his favourite Flor de Rafael Gonzalez. These had been chosen with great assistance from the attentive Monsieur Gerard following much discussion about the size, strength, condition and colour of the final selection.

Having made his choice, Robbie downed the remainder of the whisky and puffed contentedly on the mid-morning cigar made especially for M Gerard and handed out reverentially by him to ‘preferred’ clients.
