Chapter Eight

Erin stuck around for Wade and Brent to get their awards, then, still shaken by the kiss, trucked off to the special harvest festival petting zoo to help the volunteers. She desperately needed to get her head straight. The man had waltzed into her life two weeks ago, how had he already managed to sweep her off her feet?

Unable to figure out what to do next, she hid out with the little tots and pets. Though assigned to the stables, she didn’t want to be found by Wade. She pulled a switcheroo with a trusted therapist friend, who loved the horses over kids anyway. Until the late Sunday afternoon closing of the hugely successful festival, she helped families enjoy the smaller animals, insuring she wouldn’t see Wade again. Then, considering all the hiding out she’d done when walking back to the office, she had to face the fact she was still all messed up where men were concerned.

Later, Erin sat in one of the extra offices in the main building, finishing up tallying the equine therapists and volunteers’ hours for the special weekend. With Erin having a business background, Dr. Anderson delegated her to record the hours worked for employees, and equally important the number of volunteer hours accrued by the high school and college volunteers. So often anymore, volunteer time was a requirement for entry to higher education.

With steps like a cat, Dr. Anderson approached Erin. “Pretty amazing about those Conrads almost winning the cook-off, right?”

After Erin jumped in her seat, she quickly realized who it was, and without effort her mood brightened. “I know.” She put away the tally sheets, which she’d transfer to the computer later, and straightened the top of the group desk in the small office, while Elsbeth leaned on the doorframe, biding her time.

“I tasted theirs, too, and if I’d been judging, I would have chosen it over Iva’s.”

Erin’s head shot up. “Did you tell him, I mean them, that?”

Elsbeth shook her head. “Wouldn’t be diplomatic. I’m supposed to be neutral. You know. Switzerland.”

“Makes sense. Taste is subjective, anyway.” Erin found it hard to make eye contact with Dr. Anderson, pulling out a drawer and grabbing her purse, sensing the woman was on to her. “Wish I could’ve tasted it.”

“I’m sure that’ll be arranged. Couldn’t help notice you and Wade celebrate his win.”

And she was on to her. “Oh, uh, it was one of those in the spirit of the moment things. I guess.” Her cheeks went warm. “I’m a little embarrassed about it now, to be honest.”

“He was just looking for you to say goodbye. I noticed you weren’t where you were scheduled to be.” Nothing got by the woman. “Just thought I’d mention it.”

Hiding out like a schoolgirl. Still not ready for the real world. Not that Healing Heart Acres wasn’t the real world. Well, a softer kinder version of it anyway. “Thanks. I swapped with Ilona, since she’s not crazy about the smaller animals.”

“That’s fine. I’m sure you’ve already changed it on the worksheet.
