Although Japan is water-secured country, most of its rivers are dammed, often multiple times, and this has seriously disregarded the different services from the freshwater environments. For example, the areas surrounding Tokyo have undergone drastic changes; traditional rural landscapes have declined at the expense of city growth, which has two faces; one, the actual increase in city area with population growth, and two, the rural depopulation that results from people being drawn to the city. The urbanization of Tokyo has ‘eroded’ traditional lifestyles that depended on the conservation of waterscapes near homes around Tokyo (Takeuchi et al. 2003; Duraiappah et al. 2012). Despite its high degree of development and sophisticated lifestyles, Tokyo is now one of the most water-stressed cities in the world (McDonald et al. 2014).
