We Need People

You may be like Brad and Susan and find it easier to give than to receive. I, too, have a difficult time accepting help. But what we often fail to understand is that when we learn to receive, we are giving. We bless others by receiving, and it takes humility and grace to do so. Thomas Merton observed this about the paradox of giving and receiving love: “The gift of love is the gift of the power and the capacity to love, and therefore, to give love with full effect is also to receive it. So love can only be kept by being given away, and it can only be given perfectly when it is also received.” 2

When we learn to receive, we are giving. We bless others by receiving.
