Yes, We Can Survive All-Out Nuclear War
I’m sure nuclear weapons have advanced greatly since the sixties, but that’s the time I was first taught about preparing for and surviving a nuclear attack. I believe it was a class in elementary school about nuclear attacks and natural disasters. I still have the Department of Defense Handbook the school issued to us. It is dated 1968. Imagine that! Children were being taught about nuclear attacks in elementary schools in the United States in 1968. I do not think many schools teach that subject anymore, at least not in the U.S. Could this be a mistake?
I hope to make a small change in this lack of educational information by passing on my research to you and what I understand about nuclear attacks, and suggesting you study additional information on the Internet, at your local library or from your local emergency management coordinator. Much of this information is available in any good encyclopedia or from U.S. government Web sites, but you have to take the time to read and learn about it. Take time to study beyond what I pass on to you. You can teach others. We may all need to know this information someday, possibly soon, but who knows for sure. Maybe mankind will never use the thousands of missiles it has buried in the ground. I hope not!
There seems to be a lot of misinformation about nuclear attacks out there. I suppose the idea of the total destruction of mankind scares some people into indifference. They get to the point that they feel there’s nothing they can do about it. Then they decide not to worry about it. Worrying about something and learning about it is two totally different things. The more knowledge I have about things, the less I worry about them.
They Still Prepare for Nuclear War
The term “nuclear winter” turned hearts and minds into fear a few years ago. The theory was that in a full-scale nuclear war, thousands of explosions would result in millions of tons of earth being projected into the air. Also, the massive widespread fires from the explosions would produce a sky full of smoke, thus reducing the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth. The dust and smoke in the upper atmosphere could, they believe, kill most of the plant life on Earth and eventually most of the people. The people who come up with this seemingly possible theory advocated “no nuclear war.” Teaching that “no one could survive” seemed to cause people to quit preparing for possible attack. People seemed to quit caring once they believed no one would survive.
But what if some do survive? Humans have had an amazing ability to continue on through some of the most devastating events in history. When mankind finds itself on the very edge of existence, it becomes creative to provide for the very survival of the species. I believe mankind will find a way to use its modern nuclear inventions, sooner or later.
