While this might sound like I’m advising you to give up personal responsibility and wait for the police to save you, after I’ve already stated that when seconds count the police are minutes away, giving up personal responsibility is not what I’m recommending. Let me explain. Denying the killer access to you, by locking and barricading him out, is a proactive means to keep yourself and others with you alive. It’s not just “hiding and hoping,” but rather choosing the survival strategy that is best for your situation and circumstances. Surviving a shooting does not mean you have to be the one to stop the shooter and eliminate the threat. This strategy has saved people’s lives and it should be part of your survival plan.

There are different ways to deny a shooter access to you and keep them out. People say hide, which I’ve already explained I don’t like, but is saying “lock” or “barricade” much better? Yes, it is better and in this chapter, we will look at the different ways to lockdown, barricade, and deny a shooter access to you.

In the previous chapter, we looked at escaping and cover and concealment. Escaping the danger zone is one way of denying the killer access to harm you. Putting cover between you and the gunman is also denying him the means of shooting you. But for this chapter, we are more concerned with when you are in a room or space that can be locked down to keep the killer out.

The information in this chapter is designed with one purpose, and that is to help you lock down and deny the shooter access to your location to keep you safe when the opportunity to deny is available and escaping isn’t.

Whether you’re using a slingshot or an assault rifle, you can only shoot what you can see and have access to.
