Chapter 13

For the next several days, Michael blew up Natalie’s phone with text messages and calls. With much of the necessary initial planning for the gala fundraising event out of the way, it wasn’t critical for them to meet as often anymore. Natalie had certain questions and concerns that she had been able to speak directly to Penelope about.

Which had allowed her to avoid Michael.

She hadn’t answered his phone calls, but she had responded to some of his text messages—the ones where he’d asked how she was doing—with one word answers like “fine” and “okay.” She had ignored his many requests to let him know when a good time to get together for dinner would be.

She knew she must look absolutely wishy-washy to him. One minute melting against him as he kissed her, the next, cold. But after reading those scathing reports about him on the web, her fear about a man like Michael being innately untrustworthy had come roaring back.

She couldn’t afford to take a chance with a man like that.

It would be one thing if she weren’t attracted to him. Then she could talk to him, meet him for dinner, even hang out without any issue. But she was attracted to him, and she could no longer deny that. The truth was, she knew that she had been attracted to him the moment she had first seen him on the street.

He had the exact look, physique and smile that could draw her in. Heck, you would have to be dead not to feel something when a man like Michael Jones looked at you.

The only way to quash what she was feeling for Michael was to cut off all unnecessary communication with him. She knew they would have to talk once the program for the fundraiser was finalized. They would have to determine how they would share their hosting duties—who would say what and when. But Natalie figured they had a couple of weeks before they had to nail that down—two more weeks in which she could get her feelings under control.

She hoped that her minimal responses would have inspired Michael to eventually stop reaching out to her, but it was becoming clearer to her that he would not be deterred. A full week after the radio interview, Natalie was at the mall with her sisters and nephew when Michael called. Three times in a row.

When the phone began to ring for the fourth time, Callie met her gaze from across a rack of blouses and asked, “Aren’t you going to answer your phone?”

“I wasn’t planning on it.”

“You’re going to play that hard-to-get act until you really push him away,” Deanna said in a warning tone.

Natalie glanced at Kwame, whose eyes were locked on the screen of a Nintendo DS. He wasn’t paying attention to their conversation.

“That’s pretty much the idea,” Natalie said.

“Because of that crap you read on the internet,” Deanna said, and rolled her eyes.

Natalie shrugged. “Where’s there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

“You want to know the
