* * * *

Falkner was gone again. It took Andrew a second to realize it because he was used to sharing a bed, and he wasn’t alone this evening. But it wasn’t Falkner whose legs were tangled with his. It was Richie, who was still sleeping.

And Falkner was gone.

Andrew hadn’t heard him get out of bed. He hadn’t heard him sneak out of the bedroom, and God only knew where he was now. Andrew had thought they were over this now that they’d talked, but apparently, he’d been wrong.

Had Falkner freaked out when he’d woken up and had found both Andrew and Richie in bed with him? Or was it something else? They should have talked more yesterday, but they’d all been overwhelmed, and after they’d fallen into Richie’s bed, they’d stayed there and then fallen asleep. The result was that now Falkner was gone, and Andrew had no idea why or where he’d gone.

“What’s going on?”

Andrew jerked at the sound of Richie’s voice. “I didn’t realize you were awake.”

Richie sat up and rolled his eyes. “I noticed that when you jerked as if I’d scared you. Did I?”

“I was just surprised.”

Richie looked around the room. “Where’s Falkner?”

“I have no idea. He was gone when I woke a few minutes ago.”

Richie looked at Andrew, and Andrew had to resist the urge to hide what he was feeling. He knew he wasn’t good at it, and that all his expressions were always visible on his face. He wanted Richie to get to know him and to understand him, but he felt incredibly vulnerable right now, especially with Falkner gone.

“Maybe he went downstairs to get something to eat or drink,” Richie said.

“Maybe.”

“But you don’t believe he did.”

Andrew sighed. “I don’t know what to believe, but considering he’s been disappearing almost every day lately, I don’t want to assume he’s still in the house.”

“So you think he snuck out again. Why would he have done that? I thought he left because he didn’t want to talk to you about his feelings.”

“I thought that was the case, too, but I’m not sure anymore.” Andrew hesitated. “Unless last night didn’t go well?”

Richie gave him a rakish grin. “I think it went great, but of course, I’m only one of three.”

“You’re not freaking out?”

“Definitely not. I’d been thinking about this for a while. You think Falkner freaked out? Because he seemed to be okay with it last night. I mean, he did most of the talking.”

Andrew shook his head. “I don’t know. I didn’t think this would happen, and I hope it’s not because of what we did, and if it’s not, it means there was something else behind it.” Was Falkner in trouble? Was that why he’d been sneaking out?

Richie leaned closer and kissed Andrew’s cheek. “Let’s walk around the house and see if we can find him. It’s no use freaking out before we even know he’s gone for sure.”

He was right, but Andrew knew they wouldn’t find Falkner. He was gone, whatever the reason behind it.
