The volume of surfactant is the amount of surfactant in the microemulsion. For example, if one mg of surfactant is present in the system, it will be taken as one mL.

Figure 4.2 explains the calculations. OV and WV are the original volumes of oil and water, respectively. Microemulsion volume is represented by VE. The solubilized volumes of oil (VO) and water (VW) can be obtained by subtracting their original volumes from the volume of the microemulsion. The volume of surfactant is merely its concentration (weight) in the test tube; its density is usually taken as one.
