After hours of cleaning and clearing, we all decided to go out to eat. I was starving and in the mood for Italian food, but everyone else said they weren’t dressed appropriately so we agreed to get pizza at the spot we used to go to after the basketball games when we were in high school. I remember how Courtney and I would watch the games to check out the ballplayers, and Zakia and Randi were both cheerleaders who were paying more attention to the basketball players than the game. We had so much fun.

“I see you’ve gotten your appetite back.”

Randi notices everything.

“And I am still starved. Is that a barbeque and pineapple pizza I see at the other end?”

I’ll just go get a few more slices.

“Hey, Courtney, you remember that guy Risa was crazy about senior year?”

Why did Zakia have to bring that up?

“Yessss! Z, what was his name?”

“Robert Billingsley.”

Why does she remember that?

“Marisa Billingsley.”

Now Kenny’s in on the joke.

“Watch it, Junior.”

“Risa was so into that guy she named one of her teddy bears after him. Bobby Bear.”

I’m going to choke Randi for that.

“Why are you trying to embarrass me?”

“She was crazy about him but wouldn’t even talk to him.”

And why is she ignoring me?

“Whenever he tried to ask her out she would stutter a little and walk away. Did you ever get up the nerve to go out with him?”

“Yeah, I did.”

“You did?”

Oh yeah, I never told Courtney.

“When? And why don’t I know about it?”

“Well, we didn’t really go out. He ended up walking me home once. Remember the homecoming dance? You and Daniel were really into each other. Randi was flirting with Carlos what’s-his-name—”

“Figures.”

And now the drama comes back to Randi.

“and, Z, I don’t know where you were—”

“Figures.”

Here they go. I’ll just ignore them.

“but I was ready to go. I was standing outside waiting on you guys, and Robert walked over. He asked what I was doing outside, and I told him I was on my way home. He offered to walk with me.”

“Girl, you told me you called Aunt Felice to pick you up.”

“Courtney, hush. What else happened?”

“Nothing much. He walked me home and said he needed to use our bathroom. I let him in, and the next thing I knew, we were in the hall bathroom getting our high school groove on.”

“Marisa Turner!”

That’s why I didn’t tell Courtney. She’s such a big sister.

“You slut!”

First time I ever heard Randi and Zakia agree on anything.

“Why didn’t you tell us then?”

“When we were ‘done,’ he left unnoticed, and the next day he acted like nothing happened. We didn’t say anything to each other for the rest of the year. I was so embarrassed by the whole thing that I thought it would be best if I never mentioned it.” It broke my heart too. I thought we were going to be a couple after that, but the next day, he acted like he didn’t even know me. As a matter of fact, he and one of Zakia’s cheerleader friends ended up dating for the rest of the year.
