The next day, Superman awoke to a hill of riches glittering beside him and the sound of Luthor’s laughter echoing in the vault.

“I guess you are super after all,” Luthor said when he spotted the diamonds. “You’re super good at making me richer.”

Superman struggled to stand. He felt worse than before. “Luthor. You have what you want, not that you needed more wealth. Now release the hostages and let me go!”

“You’re right,” Luthor agreed. “I don’t need more money. But diamonds are so pretty! And keeping you locked up in my vault is absolutely priceless.”

Luthor snapped his fingers. His cronies raked up the new diamonds and dumped in more coal. When they were finished, there was hardly any room left for Superman.

“Better get busy,” Luthor said over his shoulder. Then—

SLAM! CLACK! WHIRRRR!

The vault door closed and was locked from the outside.

Superman sighed and fell back against the mountain of coal. This is never going to end, he realized. The guard will keep taking my powers one by one. Luthor will keep getting richer, and the hostages will stay locked up!

Superman’s hands tightened into fists.

I’ve got to do something, he thought. Whatever it takes to make sure the hostages go free! If I can’t do it myself, then maybe…

“Guard!” Superman shouted. “Guard!”

Once more, the guard appeared from out of nowhere. “More diamonds?” he asked with a wicked grin.

“No,” Superman said. “I don’t care about making Luthor’s diamonds. I care about freeing the hostages. I don’t know who or what you are, or how you fit into all this. But I do know you’re more than human.”

Superman took a deep breath. This strange man, with his even stranger magic, was only helpful if there was an exchange. And the Man of Steel was about to make an irreversible deal!

“If you can promise the safe release of the hostages,” he continued, “I will give up anything. In fact, I will give up everything.”

Mr. Mxyzptlk paused. Everything? Now that was an offer! He paced back and forth as he considered it. The whole point of this game was to play with the hero. Mxy wanted to watch him struggle. Simply taking the rest of Superman’s powers without giving him a fighting chance just didn’t seem fair—or fun.

The magical mischief-maker stopped in front of the hero. He decided to make Superman a new offer. After all, there was nothing as exciting as a good twist!

“Very well. Give up all your powers, and I will free the hostages and you,” the guard said. “But, to keep things interesting, I will give you a chance to get your powers back.”

Superman looked up.

“You will have three days to guess who I am,” the small man continued. “If you can discover my name, all your powers will be restored. But if you can’t, they’ll be gone for good. What do you say?”

The guard looked at the Man of Steel with a pleased expression.

Then Superman did what he had to do. With a nod, he gave up every last one of his superpowers.
