I wonder if I should start charging taxi fare, Supergirl thought as she carried Winn up seven flights of stairs.

Darkness had fallen, and while Alex and Guardian patrolled the streets and Mon-El watched the DEO prisoners, Supergirl, J’onn, and Winn sought out Jason Blood. The demonologist’s room was on the inn’s fifteenth floor, and Winn’s legs had given up on the eighth.

“This is so humiliating,” Winn said as Supergirl cradled him in her arms.

“You could’ve stayed behind with Dr. Hoshi to watch over Lena. Or taken the elevator,” she reminded Winn with a smirk.

“Elevator?” Winn repeated. “You mean that rickety death box held up with twine?”

Supergirl had to admit it looked precarious, but she’d inspected it with her X-ray vision, and the turnstile-and-pulley system was actually solid. Still, she felt bad for the men having to turn the shaft that raised and lowered the lift.

“Also, these buildings are seriously tripping me out,” Winn added. “How are they so much bigger on the inside? They’re like . . .” His eyes widened. “They’re like TARDISes! And you’re Doctor Who!” He pointed to Supergirl and whispered, “Which makes me the doctor’s companion. Sweet.”

“Uh . . . sure?” Supergirl said. She adjusted her grip on Winn, who flinched.

“Why couldn’t we just zip up the outside of the hotel?” he asked.

“That’s the exact opposite of covert,” said J’onn, his voice reverberating off the walls.

He was flying after Supergirl and Winn in his true form: Martian Manhunter. His green torso was clothed in black body armor that was crisscrossed with a red X.

“We can’t risk Marcus finding out where we’ve gone,” added Supergirl.

After one more bend in the stairs, a metal plate appeared on the wall with FLOOR 15 carved into it.

“Here we are.” Supergirl lowered Winn to the floor while J’onn transformed back into his Hank Henshaw guise and opened the stairwell door. He peeked down the hallway and beckoned to Supergirl and Winn.

“Say nothing about our business until we’re in private once more,” J’onn warned them. “We don’t know who could be listening.”

Supergirl and Winn nodded and followed him toward Jason Blood’s room. Halfway to their destination, a door opened to their left. A man and woman emerged and gasped. The woman fell back against the wall, and the man pressed a hand to his heart.

“Supergirl,” he whispered.

“Hello,” she said with a polite nod.

The woman ran back into her room, and Supergirl reached out after her.

“Wait, please don’t be scared!” she called.

But the woman reappeared a moment later holding an apple. She knelt before Supergirl and raised the apple high, bowing her head.

Winn snickered, and J’onn elbowed him.

“Forgive this paltry offering, O Supergirl!” bemoaned the woman.

“Oh! Thank you?” said Supergirl, taking the apple.

The man gave his partner a scornful look. “We can do better.”

“No no, that’s not necessary!” Supergirl said as the man ran into the room. He trotted back out holding a vase and a golden hourglass.

Mimicking the woman’s gesture, he knelt with his offerings above his head.

“Um . . . I’m pretty sure you can’t give away the inn’s stuff,” said Winn.
