Chapter 18

Etiam capillus unus habet umbram.

Even one hair casts a shadow.

When they’d all said goodbye to their families, Maddie, Lexi, and Caleb met Zander on the far side of the island, away from the party. He clicked something twice, and a pale blue minivan appeared out of thin air. They all climbed in and soared up and over the Statue of Liberty, circling the seven points on her crown before zooming over the Hudson River. The river sparkled beneath them as they flew toward lower Manhattan. The tall glass Freedom Tower shone like a prism in the sun.

“So the flying cars are . . . legal?” Maddie asked as the car rose, helicopter-style, even higher into the air.

“I don’t think so,” Zander said. “But remember, I’ve put up the cloaking shields. And the Illuminati have a good relationship with the ‘official’ authorities that goes back decades. We also have agents high up in almost every industry.”

The flying car looped and banked with the air currents as they traveled over the Financial District, over the bustling shops of Chinatown and the West Village, and up over Union Square.

They swerved past the stately Flatiron Building, its unique triangular shape like the prow of a ship pointed up Fifth Avenue and Broadway. And then they pulled up next to the tallest building around. It was silver and rectangular, with a pyramidal roof ending in a tall spire.

“May I present the Empire State Building!” Zander said. The car rotated upward ninety degrees and began to fly parallel to the outer walls of the building, like it was zooming up the side.

“Ummm, did I mention I get carsick?” Caleb asked. But the kids couldn’t stop smiling. This was more fun than a roller coaster.

“The hundredth floor is ours,” Zander said. “Well, technically, we control more of the building than that, but this is our New York satellite office. Are you ready to see it?”

“Uh.” Caleb cleared his throat tentatively. “How do we get in? We’re up pretty high. Is there a bridge or something?”

“I used to take trapeze classes,” Lexi offered. “I could swing us in one at a time.”

Zander chuckled. “As always, I’m impressed by your determination. But it’s actually quite simple.” He grabbed a rectangular piece of white plastic with a round white button off the dashboard. “Garage door opener. Archibald Archibald bought it at Home Depot.”

A section of the Empire State Building’s wall of steel and windows started rolling upward, just like a garage door! The car turned horizontal again and parked itself inside.

“See? Simple,” Zander repeated. “No need to take the elevator, and we don’t have to move the car for street cleanings.”

An unfamiliar man stood at the corner of the garage. “Archibald Archibald?” Maddie asked.

He stifled a gasp. “You recognized me?” he asked.

“Nope!” said Maddie. “That’s how I knew it was you!”

Archibald smiled. “Right this way,” he said with a sweep of his arm.

Archibald Archibald led them through a labyrinth of hallways lit by flaming torches, which cast dramatic shadows over the beige walls and beige-carpeted floors.
