Chapter Twenty

Erius

My mortal hadn’t spoken to me the rest of the night and well into the morning. Instead, she talked to her cat loudly enough for me to hear her plans and displeasure with my invasion of her privacy. I did not find any interest in her personal relationships to read any messages, but it was hard to ignore several notifications popping up throughout the night and day with no response to silence them. It was as if she was waiting for something she clearly did not care to hear. It had burdened her deeply. I could taste it in her soul. Whatever it was had weighed heavily on her. Now, I felt she simply did not have the capacity to care, or she did not want to.

She stormed into the van, her cat racing in behind her. Her frequent failed attempts at a full change carved irritation deep into her brows. Not one successful formation was made through the many attempts. The most she was able to conjure up was her tail, which she did not care for in the slightest.

There was something we were missing about her previous transformations that we simply were not adding. If it was her frustrations that triggered it, how flustered must she be?

Mina’s tail swung around behind her gracefully as she marched over to the cabinet that held the scotch. While she grabbed and poured herself a glass, her new appendage found its place around my wrist.

“Ah! Hey, don’t touch.” She jumped up, startled by the contact. She reached out to snatch it from me when I paused her, holding out my hand before gently unwrapping it from my wrist.

“You are going to damage it if you keep ripping at it like that. You should embrace what it snags onto.” I handed her tail to her, adding a curve to my lips to show I meant no harm.

“Yeah, you’d like that, wouldn’t you?” She took a drink of the scotch, glaring at me through narrowed eyes as she did. She didn’t stop for a breath until the tail had drifted away.

“Ew. That feels weird,” she said with a twisted grimace before finishing off the rest of her glass and slamming it down. “I’m ready to go.”

“You should eat,” I suggested. After so many attempts, successful or not, she had used a great deal of energy.

“We can stop for something on the way back to the beach. I’m not all that hungry,” she grumbled as she took her spot in the passenger’s seat. Her head fell back with clear exhaustion.

I slid into my newly designated seat, handing her a cold bottle of water as I did. She wasn’t the healthiest of mortals, and frighteningly dehydrated. I was unsure how she lasted this long, clearly powered by the gross amount of bravery flooding her veins. She took it with a faint smile as I pulled off.

We headed down the lengthy dirt path that led out of the forest, leaving a dusty cloud to trail behind us.
