Use the Internet: A great networking tool if you use it wisely. Keep messages brief and informative.
Keep Your Network Active
Be active. The more people you know and the more friendships you cultivate, the more people you will know well. Some of your contacts — hopefully, many — will breed other contacts.
When you plan to visit a city, call people in your network and ask to meet them. Your contacts will be flattered by your interest. Whether or not you do meet, the offer breeds a stronger relationship.
In some cities, I've had three breakfasts with three different groups of people — although you need to watch your diet, there is no rule against this. A friend facetiously commented that the way to “do New York” is to plan three lunches on the same day. Because many New Yorkers commute, breakfast or dinner meetings are inconvenient.
The bad news about networking is the continuous investment of time and energy. The good news is that it is fun and generates results.
Statisticians say only four contact links separate you from anyone in the world. That is, if you know the name of the person you want to reach. And, if you don't? What if you are looking for someone who can help you solve a problem and you do not know precisely who that person is? Then you really need a network — and the broadest base yields the best responses.
In Summary
Set stretch goals.
Solidify every contact.
Actively work your network.
