LeeAnn

3 Hours Gone

“YOU WHAT?!”

A blood-red light is blurring my vision. Somehow, out of all the emotions I’ve experienced in the past few hours, my anger is tunneling past them all, barreling out of my mouth without a filter. The flashes of rage are so intense that I barely register that I’m screaming into the phone from the cavernous interior of Sarah’s SUV.

“She wants to help, LeeAnn.”

His pathetic explanations do nothing to soothe the ferocity of the animal inside me, longing to burst out and rip him to shreds.

“I was just trying to do something useful.”

“Well, no one asked you to suddenly start trying, did they?” I retort, his innocent act infuriating me.

“You called,” he grumbles in the dejected voice he used to put on whenever I caught him making a mistake. “And she’s my daughter too. I’m just trying to make sure we cover our bases.”

“We? We’re covering our bases?” I shout, barking out a laugh. “There is no ‘we,’ Dan. ‘We’ ended a long time ago. Remember back when you got hammered and decided to tell me that you were abandoning your family on our anniversary? Your wife? Your child?”

He doesn’t say anything on the other end.

“Well, ever since then, there hasn’t been a ‘we,’” I continue, too irate to be embarrassed by Sarah sitting next to me, purposefully keeping her eyes front. “So I’d really appreciate it if you stopped trying to pretend like you’re suddenly this great family man. I don’t have time to worry about Corrine Fucking Carter right now. My daughter is missing.”

Saying the words aloud again sends an electric shock through me. Suddenly I don’t feel so angry anymore. Now I’m just scared.

“Our daughter,” Dan insists, and I’m surprised to hear a bit of confidence he’s rarely displayed before seeping through the phone. “Look, I can just go if you want. You don’t have to come. But I don’t think it could hurt to have some parents who know Gracie helping to look for her and John. I had to do something, Lee.”

I picture him commanding the group of PTA moms as they flutter their eyelashes at him. I need to punch something.

Dan is the villain. Dan is the villain. I mentally repeat the phrase to reassure me of its truth. But I no longer have the energy to fight with him. It’s time to stop being stubborn and find Gracie.

“Fine. Where are they meeting?”
