14. The People Of The Red Willow

Looking for it during the all-male ceremony the kiva dark, smoky, the drumming like breaking thunder, not his own tribe but what the hell close relatives only flashlights to see by and the glowing ends of joints going around endlessly in the damp earthdark in the press of sweaty bodies pounding on buffalo-hide drums shaped like puddles like ponds like lakes, bigger than any factory-round drum he’s ever seen. never any alcohol none of the white man’s shit medicine the specters of flashlight faces rutted with shadow like parched earth, he heard spanish heard the sometimes-guttural sometimes-bird-call sounds of the people of the red willow praying to a god who was there before the anglos the same god white men brought but with a different face. stripped down to shorts, sliding off each other’s backs and arms, singing sweating chanting all night their voices a single prayer he doesn’t always know the words doesn’t always know whether there are words echoes what he hears knowing theirs is not the first voice ours won’t be the last. an indian god or a man sitting next to him? the breath of both smoke. earth-and-stone smell of the kiva the air humid stifling, hot with a god’s burning breath. joined by something deeper than blood a hundred heartbeats on a single buffalo-hide drum in the underground night a world without time without barbed-wire fences without boundaries a world that’ll never spin down to nothing will emerge not into a simple blueing of sky and light chasing off night’s ragged edges but a slow coming to wakefulness
