Chapter 18

The Hamptons

July 2021

Never in all her years had Olivia been grateful for a party save for today. Travis, her dear friend and hairdresser, had rented a lush mansion in East Hampton. Olivia hadn’t returned since the party with her old coworkers. After a poor experience, between the gossiping and copious drinks, she promised herself to never convene with coworkers outside of work.

Though she never thought to dismiss East Hampton entirely, there were far too many interesting locales to travel to.

When Travis came calling, she came running. For the past decade, he’d permed and pressed her hair into perfection. He even warned her years ago to move away from relaxers, or what he called “creamy crack,” because eventually her hair would thin from the chemicals.

She wanted his reaction to her new ’do, or rather, her transitioning hair. Though she followed Bea’s advice to check out Dita, the woman’s schedule had been booked to the gills, and she wouldn’t be able to see her until next week. For now, Olivia had viewed a million YouTube tutorials, and made hair concoctions from mixing bananas, oil, and yogurt and using Bea’s products. Somehow, her hair had survived, and even thrived under her inexpert care. At the moment, she styled her tendrils into small strawlike twists that hung just above her shoulders.

Traffic was busy for her and Anderson’s drive from Sag Harbor Hills to East Hampton. Although it was less than ten miles away, it felt like hundreds of miles. From the crawl-like flow of traffic to the distinct look of the homes. From what Olivia could glean through the seven-foot landscaped shrubbery, the homes transitioned from white, or bark-brown shingle style homes in Sag Harbor, to massive structures ranging from new white farm homes set on several acres of land to a mishmash of shingles and bricks with austere gray roofs.

East Hampton residents firmly straddled between colonial seaside and opulence. Some had done it extremely well, while others had built mansions with an identity crisis.

And then there was Travis’ rental home, which suffered from no such identity crisis. It was pure opulence—modern architecture with thick glass panes that let in natural light.

Anderson reached over the console and grabbed her hand. “It’ll be nice to have a change in scenery, yeah?”

“Yes,” Olivia agreed.

Anderson and Olivia were the first to arrive. Travis stood on the balcony and waved his arms in the air, directing them to the pebbled driveway that led to the garage. One side of the double garage opened. Anderson took it as a sign to park the car. By the time they’d parked and pulled out luggage, Travis was standing in the driveway.

Olivia accompanied her friend while they walked toward the front door. He’d gathered his curly hair and pulled it into a low ponytail, but she knew once the party was in full swing it would hang loose. His ensemble included a short-sleeve turquoise shirt, with a few unsnapped buttons, baring his shiny brown and smooth chest. He wore dark blue shorts that sat just above his knees and low-top laced sneakers.
