Chapter 7

Mateo approached with a new bottle and the mischievous smile he flashed at the beginning of Clemente when he welcomed the audience to the show. The same smile that snagged Vanessa’s heart like a fisherman’s hook, reeling her in without much of a fight.

She didn’t know what had possessed her to suggest more alcohol after he had dropped the suggestion. Switching to water was the smarter way to go.

Not that she always followed the smartest route suggested by the GPS of her life.

Case in point, while she had arrived at her intended destination, the Big Apple, she’d taken a completely different path from the one originally planned.

“You sure?” Mateo held the wine aloft.

“Truth?”

He grinned at her answer.

Coño, she could totally understand how his female costars were charmed by him. Working so closely with someone who effortlessly exuded this much magnetism? Fat chance of not falling under his spell.

But she could resist. She had to. At least until she knew for sure she could trust him.

Tonight, she’d seen signs pointing in that very direction.

“I hope there’s always truth between us.”

His serious tone gave her pause. Had her wondering if he was breaking his own rule by bringing in the past, the outside world he’d bidden her to hold at bay for the time being.

If so, there was a truth she owed him.

“But I’ve been known to rise to the challenge of a dare or two in my life,” Mateo drawled. His dimple made its impish appearance, and Vanessa let the worry of apologies unspoken drift away.

While Mateo used the opener’s attached blade to slice and remove the thick foil wrapped around the top of the bottle, Vanessa bent over her leg to remove the now room-temperature bag of vegetables. At this rate, she was going to owe Mateo and Jeff a week’s worth of frozen food.

“How does it feel?” Mateo asked.

“Better. Though I can’t be certain whether that’s thanks to the pain meds you gave me earlier, the frozen veggie packs, or the wine.”

“Probably a combination of all three. Here, let me take a look.” He set down the opener and bottle, swapping them for the flashlight, then circled the metal coffee table as he stepped toward her.

Bending closer to her propped-up foot, Mateo shone the light over her ankle to examine her injury.

“You . . . you mind, if I . . .” He extended a hand toward her foot, stopping before he actually touched her.

Dios, how she wanted him to touch her. In a completely different way. For completely different reasons. Keeping those thoughts to herself, Vanessa bit her lip and tipped her head, indicating her assent.

Mateo slipped his hand under her foot to gently cup her heel. Damn if every cell in her body didn’t perk up as if asking for his attention. He lifted her foot a little and bent lower, at what had to be an uncomfortable angle given his height.

“Feel free to sit down if you want,” she suggested.

He turned his head to glance at her, his chiseled face a mix of light and dark shadows.
