Hope and Her Parents

Hope’s parents do not feature prominently in her memoir, but their influence looms large over her life. She clearly inherited her love of science from her father, who is a community college teacher. When she was a small child, her father’s lab was the center of her universe; it felt more homey than home and sacred like a church. Her mother, who once dreamed of pursuing science herself, wasn’t a particularly loving figure in Hope’s life. Still, she helped instill a love of literature in Hope by involving her daughter in the English literature correspondence courses she took through the mail. Although her writing only recently has become a professional pursuit, Hope seems to regard her love for words as a force that has shaped her life as much as her love for science.
