Timeline

1753: A Portuguese soldier of fortune allegedly discovers a vast city in the Amazon interior, which Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett later nicknames “Z.”

1867: Percy Harrison Fawcett is born.

1896: B. F. Goodrich manufactures the first automobile tires, sparking “rubber madness” which consumes the Amazon.

February 4, 1900: Fawcett goes to study the essentials of exploration at the Royal Geographic Society (RGS) for the first time.

January 31, 1901: Fawcett and Nina Agnes Paterson marry.

May 1903: Fawcett and Nina’s first child, Jack, is born.

1906: Fawcett is invited by the RGS to take part in the South American border commission.

1907: Fawcett completes his mission to define certain borders in South America.

1911: Fawcett embarks on an expedition into the Amazon with James Murray, famed polar scientist; Hiram Bingham uncovers the ruins of Machu Picchu, nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, in the Andes.

1914: Fawcett discovers the Maxubis, an Indian civilization whose population numbers in the thousands and who had developed pottery and astronomy; World War I begins.

May 22, 1916: Fawcett receives the Founder’s Gold Medal from the RGS, their highest honor.

June 28, 1919: Germany signs the Treaty of Versailles, officially ending World War I.

1920: Fawcett moves his family to Jamaica.

August 1921: After a number of failed attempts with small crews, Fawcett embarks on a search for Z alone. Nina moves the family to Los Angeles.

September 1921: Due to economic hardship, the Fawcetts move back to England and take up residence in Stoke Canon.

February 11, 1925: Fawcett, Jack, and Raleigh leave Rio de Janeiro on their trip into the Amazon interior. They will never return.

February 1928: George Miller Dyott launches the first major rescue operation searching for Fawcett and his crew, to no avail. Many failed rescue attempts follow.

1996: Brazilian banker James Lynch seeks out Fawcett and is taken hostage with his son.

2005: Journalist David Grann begins his hunt for the truth about Fawcett and Z.
