Key Takeaway 2: Lies

THERE ARE THREE lies people struggle to overcome—that we’re helpless, worthless, and unlovable.

Each of the seven emotions identified in Part 2 are typical struggles for daily life, like anger, discontent, shame, and fear. As each of these emotions is identified, the direction for interrupting the negative thought cycle that follows becomes clear.

Each idea emphasizes one lie that we believe about ourselves in relation to our Creator, God. The truth statement follows, and the mind map (depicting the cycle) is altered showing what the new outcome might be if we succeed in redirecting our negative thoughts.

In the discipline of psychology, there are three lies that are said to deceive people and derail a balanced outlook. Each of the lies comes in different forms and manifestations, but all three possess the same three basic premises—that we are helpless to act, that we are worthless in life (to somebody or to God), and that we are unlovable because of who we are or what we have done.

Lies are the tool of Satan, referred to in the Bible as the Father of Lies, to detract from the truth. God cannot abide lies, which is why he formulated the plan to liberate people from their sin by the death of His Son. Lies are also prevalent in human existence, because our minds are hard-wired to be suggestable, self-centered, and easily distracted.

One of the major lessons in the book is that cynicism and beauty are mutually exclusive in our minds. We cannot be cynical about life when we stand in awe of it or its Maker. We cannot be negative and angry about our lot in life when we are fixated on the glory and grace of a beloved Savior who wants a relationship with us.

Beauty is the catalyst that God uses to awaken us to the truth of who we are and where we are living. We see details and appreciate them as something outside of ourselves, which draws our focus away from our personal bubbles. Beauty is also the doorway to hope.

The point of the techniques in the book is to direct us to the truth of our freedom to CHOOSE. We can decide how we live, how we think, and how we let our feeling run things. It’s part of God’s gift to us.

Allen suggests a mental story map exercise for us to explore certain emotions in more detail on page 53. The rest of Part 2 explores how each interruption can rewire our entire outlook and bring us back to Jesus—free, unafraid, accepted, and aware of how much God loves us. It’s the basis of her IF ministry, too—which spreads the message that ‘there is room for you here.’
