Zadicus cursed while Khrom pulled bits of sand from his skin. “Fucking wretched Jinn. I will wipe out the lot of them. Ow!” He jerked and flashed his apprentice an evil glare.

“Sorry.” Khrom set aside the tweezers and blotted blood with a damp cloth.

Zadicus mumbled under his breath. “Tell me what have you learned about this Crone.”

“His family is the strongest among the Jinn. His older brother only recently came back into the family fold.” Khrom tossed the cloth back into the bowl of water and rose from his seat to stoke the fire. “It seems he had been cursed by an angry genie who stripped his magic and banned him to earth.”

The warlock stroked his short beard. “How did he break the curse?”

Khrom looked back from poking the fire. “A woman. Her name is Makayla, and it seems she destroyed the genie.”

Zadicus’s heart rate increased. “Did he mate with this female?”

“She is his vetemba, and it seems Crone is smitten with his new sister-in-law, as well as being close to his brothers.”

Zadicus experienced a rush of power. A vetemba was a Jinn’s other half. A rare female destined to be one with the Jinn and help increase his power. It was some wonderful lovey-dovey match, and the thought made the warlock ill. He believed in more of a “take what you want” approach. However, this made his life much easier. “Looks like we’ve found the perfect weakness.” Zadicus moved to a shimmering pool of water so clear he could see the rocks fifty feet below. Closing his eyes, he waved his hand over the top and chanted a locating spell. When he opened them, the water had transformed into a window revealing a dark-haired woman on the other side. Zadicus had to admit, her beauty was astounding, and he would take pleasure in having her company.

“Come, Khrom. I’ll need your power so I may break through their barrier.” The demon stepped beside him and they joined hands, chanting until a portal opened, and Zadicus was able to show himself.

“Jinn queen,” he whispered.

Makayla startled and looked up from the papers on her desk. “Who are you?”

The warlock made sure to put on his best demeanor. “I’m a friend. Your mate and brother are in trouble. You must come quickly.”

She rose from her seat so fast the chair fell backwards. “Armand?” There was concern in her voice. “Is he hurt?”

“He’s trapped and I need your help to free them both. My magic isn’t strong enough, so he told me to summon you.”

She stepped around her desk then stopped. “Why does he not summon me himself?”

Damn bitch. Very well. Zadicus projected his magic until he was able to imitate Armand’s faint voice and commanded it to speak her name.

“Kayla.”

“He’s weak. You must hurry,” Zadicus urged.

The Jinn queen stepped closer to his portal, still hesitant. “Armand?”

“Kayla, help me.”

She moved closer, but Zadicus could tell she was weary. One more step and he’d have her. “Are you not going to help your husband?”

Another step and he sent out his black magic and sucked her in, slamming the portal shut behind her.
